Could everyone’s concerns be resolved by having two primitives: 1) property thermodynamic state and 2) simulation ensemble? Thus, the KIM framework would allow one to filter results if they believe that the chosen simulation ensemble is not a reasonable choice to produce the desired thermodynamic state.
