why not write a small script that will generate
an explicit lammps script. for all iterations?

Yes, that is easier to understand but has to increase the contents.
That is why I am wondering whether I can do it in a loop. Thank you

You need v_a, not $a to do what you want, since the formula
is enclose in parens. The script below produces the log
output below, which appears to be what you want.
