The first LAMMPS workshop was about this time last year (24-26 Feb
2010). I am curious, are there any plans for another workshop in the
near future?
Paul keeps track of interest in this ... he can respond.
Steve
We're planning on holding the next LAMMPS workshop this summer or fall (2011). If you haven't already let me know you're interested in attending the next LAMMPS workshop, please send me an e-mail with your name and institution. Sam: I'll add you to the list.
Paul
Hi,
My name is Enrique Martinez, I am working at LANL and I would be interested in attending a LAMMPS workshop.
Thanks,
Enrique
Hi.
I wonder if in the future you may consider holding the workshop in
some other country. Quantum Espresso (another great scientific
software under the GNU GPL) workshops are held regularly in various
countries.
I also wonder if other people in the list would be interested in
having their own "National workshops" locally.
Thank You and Best Regards
Manoj
Manoj, thank you for your interest and your suggestion. We have no plans to hold a LAMMPS workshop outside the U.S. any time in the foreseeable future. But you or others could certainly hold "national workshops" locally.

hi manoj,
i know the QE folks very well and have been helping
them with a couple of their workshops, too.
the key point to have a workshop in your favorite location
is that _you_ have to do something about it. you have to
find a suitable location, you have to organize how people
can participate and how accommodation is handled and
you have to secure funding for it. the latter is a particular
challenge, if you want to have speakers from a foreign country.
many of the Q-E workshops are, for example, financially
supported by the ICTP in trieste. you have to hand in a
proposal to one of their programs, typically in collaboration
with a resident ICTP scientist (i can help putting you or
somebody else in contact). there are different programs,
including one that supports on-site workshops. you have
to make a good case _and_ provide some degree of matching
the ICTP funds with local funds (how much might depend
on the financial situation of your institution or area). this is
best done in collaboration with a corresponding program
officer, they tend to be very helpful and encouraging.
another option would be to propose doing a school on the
topic to be hosted at the ICTP facilities (they are very well
equipped for that) and opening it for lots of people from all
kinds of developing countries and whoever else wants to
attend. (the difference is that you have a budget to support
travel for people from developing countries, either full or in
part, everybody else has to pay their own way).
if i remember correctly, the deadline for projects to be held
next(!) year many be close or already have passed.
check out: www.ictp.it
as you can see, these things require planning ahead for
quite a bit. for the (annual) schools that i was organizing
at/with ICTP for a while we often submitted a proposal for
the next year before doing the event for the current year.
I also wonder if other people in the list would be interested in
having their own "National workshops" locally.
in general, and from personal experience, i can only recommend
organizing a workshop for yourself, particularly, if you are located
in an academic institution. since most of the infrastructure needed
would be available to you at next to no cost. the main investment
would be a time investment for getting and scheduling speakers,
figuring out how people would be accommodated (and at what cost,
and how many people would attend for those costs).
i've organized several workshops here in the US, too, and you can
get away with costs as little as $2,000 for a well organized multi-day
event for 50-80 people that pay their own way. in that case, it helps
to organize the workshop right after some big meeting somewhere
nearby, as that way you can have invited lectures for essentially the
cost of the hotel and also participants can save on travel cost, too.
i also organized workshops where we offered people to pay for the
(hotel) accommodation, if they were willing to share a room. or you
can reserve rooms in student dorms (a la gordon research conferences).
there are many ways to skin this kind of cat, but - i repeat myself -
it depends on somebody locally to set this up and do the organization.
if you depend on people elsewhere to do it for you, chances that it
happens, will drop massively.
cheers,
axel.
Axel, Paul,
Thank you for your replies. Especially Axel who shared his very
practical ideas and tips. As of now I was testing waters to see how
many people in the list from India are interested in having a
"National" LAMMPS workshop. The motivation is to learn and exchange
views with other researchers and to build a community of LAMMPS users.
Those of you who are interested in a National workshop in India may
please mail me directly instead of cluttering up the lammps
mailing-list.
Thanks once again.
Best Regards
Manoj
