I think you have to modify the potential you are using. Is it modified for short distance ? I believe you are aware of the issue that in a cascade simulation atoms appear very close to each other. If your potential can not handle such situation, the atoms will experience the repulsive part of the potential and will blow up. Reducing the time step may not be helpful in such cases.
