patch for python module

One more thing to add that should have gone to the whole list, on
site-packages .so's:

The .so s elsewhere are from "python modules" - these have been linked
against python.h and can be loaded using import, not CDLL. We don't
want to go down that road, it's a lot more hassle than it's worth (I
can suggest easier strategies that are similar, though, that involve
auto-generating the C boilerplate with Cython) - we already have a
working CDLL solution, let's stick with that.

Dropping a non-python .so into site-packages does work, as we've been
doing. It's just not Kosher, as you put it, and the .so is better
placed in the real LD_LIBRARY_PATH locations.
