control file is important for it controls some of the simulation settings. Usually default values (by using NULL) work well, but sometimes you may wish to adjust some of the parameters. Please see pair_style reax/c doc page for more details on what can be set in a control file.
On the other hand, *.trj output file is not maintained and can be errorous.
