Why force and energy in pair_style table?

Hello Lammps-Users,

can anyone explain to me, why it is necessary to specify the force and energy values for usage in the pair_style table? I was wandering since the energy can be calculated by the force and vice versa and was looking for an explanation but couldn’t find one.
