because that is how the code is programmed. apparently until now
nobody has tried to use variables with lattice units or checked the
results.

this is a bit confusing, but it’s consistent with
the way other commands that allow for variable
inputs work - i.e. the variable values are always treated
in box units, not lattice units. Note that

variables can query the lattice spacing, so
it should be possible to define a variable to
do whatever you want.

I added a line to the doc page for the velocity
command to clarify this.
