About EMC version validity

Dear veld,

I am using EMC on a HPC cluster. It is not an easy task (administratively) to update softwares installed on it. With EMC, the versions are valid only a year, I can’t use EMC anymore.

Is there something we can do to continue using olders versions ? If not, what is the explanation ?

Best,

Hi Nash,

I understand the inconvenience. The reason for limited validity of EMC is that I would like to avoid bug reports on older versions, especially bugs that already have been fixed. Currently, I am the only one maintaining EMC and aim to minimize maintenance efforts. As an aside, EMC does not need any external libraries apart from a valid Perl and BASH installation, both of which are normally available on clusters. As a cluster user, you can install EMC in your home directory and add the EMC bin and scripts directories to your path. This way you can manage EMC updates without the interference of system admins.

Hi veld,

Thank you for your answer. Yes, I am doing in that way for now. But as we are 3 users, it is not the most comfortable way to do. But I clearly understand your point.

As an alternative question : do you plan to move EMC from sourceforge to Github / Gitlab in the future ?

In my opinion, EMC is one of the most powerful tools (if not the most powerful) for creating input data for molecular simulations, so its future interests me a lot. I am sure other people would get involved in the development, and support could be dedicated to the current year version.
