Any Unreported Bugs for the 29 August 2024 Release?

Dear LAMMPS users and developers,

It has been almost a month since we released the latest stable version 29 August 2024 and the corresponding version 1.6.10 of LAMMPS-GUI.

So far the number of reported bugs and issues with these two versions has been much smaller compared to previous stable releases, so I am wondering if there are unreported bugs or unexpected behaviors that we don’t know about because nobody told us for one reason or another.

If you don’t want to report any issues in public, please contact me personally at [email protected]

Thanks in advance.

No @akohlmey, with all the unit and regression testing lately LAMMPS really is more stable.

On behalf of all LAMMPS users, we are all grateful for the considerable efforts you made on this release.

Yeah, but that level of testing has been present for several years now and thus cannot explain the drop in bug reports. In fact, we included multiple sets of “risky” changes in the stable release relative to the previous feature release and the set of changes was much larger than usual, too. That is typically a recipe for more bugs rather than fewer.

After some thinking, perhaps the explanation is that we made a final update to the previous stable version simultaneously (which we didn’t do previously) and more people have updated to that version instead of the new stable, assuming that it would have fewer bugs (and rightfully so).

Update: That said, several of the bugfixes in the upcoming update 1 for the new stable are long-standing bugs and thus also present in the older stable releases, just in parts of the code where they get only infrequently exposed.
