Atoms stuck

Hello Lammps users. I have been working on simulating repeated impact between two silicon surfaces with asperities. After multiple impacts pieces start to break off, but they quickly come to a seemingly complete stop in space almost as if they are in a very viscous fluid. I’ve been trying to figure out why this happens but I can’t find anything. i was wondering if anyone has encountered this. I am using the tersoff potential, and periodic boundaries in the x and z directions and shrink wrapped boundaries in the y. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

impossible to say anything without seeing a
(small but complete) input and being able to
reproduce it.

i have a hunch, but i prefer not to guess, if
there is the option to show and tell.
