How do I get the atoms to display as 2D circles with black outlines?It would be very ugly without the black contour lines, or is there any other good looking solution for exporting atomic models?

Among the different rendering engines included in OVITO, only VisRTX and OSPRay support displaying outlines around objects:

These two renderers support only 3D particle shapes and do not support the “Circle” particle shape. That shape is supported only by the default OpenGL renderer.

Do you have an example of the visual style you’re aiming for in your final image?

This is, of course, highly subjective. However, the various rendering engines in OVITO offer different settings that may help you achieve your desired visual style.
