any recent version should work. the feature you need has been in
LAMMPS for about 4 years!

So, there should be a wrong thing somewhere else. However, the error message shows that the pair_coeff command is not correct. Do you have any idea?

i don't have a crystal ball. it *does* work for me as expected with
the current version of LAMMPS as i have shown you. that is all that
matters to me.
