I was wondering if laamps is more cpu or disk intensive. From what I know simulations tend to be cpu intensive. I was wondering would an ssd speed things up by some margin.

Usually, no. Unless you explicitly request a lot of output, it will not matter for lammps. It may matter much more for analysis of the accumulated data after running lammps.
