I also wanted to know the references for EAM potentials.
It seems the EAM universal 3 potential is described by
the paper PRB 33,7983.
I guess it first from indication in PRB 41 33256 and from
http://oopse.org/doc-v1/node19.shtml
In this link, they also speak about the universal 6 potentials, but its
reference remain unclear
