yes, I think the current VMD (version 1.8.6 both Windows OpenGL and LINUX OpenGL) can not read the new LAMMPS dump atom file(after 18Mar09) just because the column label. the VMD versions are listed as follows:

I have modify /src/dump_atom.cpp myself and recomplie LAMMPS. It works then.
