In lammps, the stress is calculated based on the symmetric stess tensor Sab. I wonder what the name is for this stress tensor and the reason to use this stress since I could not find it in the mannual.

i don't understand what you are asking for. what kind of "name" are
you looking for. the formula for what stress/atom computes is given in
the manual page. what else do you need?

Yes, I see the formula for what the stress/atom computes. The thing is, when people ask me about what stress I am computing, I can only say that the stress in Lammps is calculated based on a formula, but I can not tell what the name of the stress is, such as cauchy stress, pk stress.

How about viral stress then?
There have been lengthy discussions on the subject of stress and how to calculate it in the past. It will probably of great help to look them up in the archives.
