I am currently trying to use OVITO basic (3.11.2) on Windows11, the question is when I try to open it nothing happens. The user interface can not be open and no error message pops up. Dose anyone have any idea how to solve this error? Thans a lot!
That sounds unusual. Without an error message or other sign of failure, it is very difficult to say where the problem lies. Could security software on your computer be preventing the program from starting?
If you are comfortable with this, you can use advanced analysis tools such as Process Monitor to find out more about what happens when OVITO starts. You need to set up a filter for ovito.exe in Process Monitor.
Question for you all: Is this the first time you have installed OVITO on your computer, or have you tried to upgrade from a previous version and now it no longer works?
It was working fine; I was using it, and then suddenly it stopped opening.
I think it’s been 2 or 3 days.
I had uninstalled and reinstalled it, but it won’t open.
The same thing happened in 3.11.0.
It sounds like you are having two very different experiences. @xudong’s computer is not running any version of OVITO successfully. On @nitin_luhadiya’s computer it worked before, now suddenly it doesn’t, only an old version of OVITO still works.
What you can both try: Start OVITO with the command line parameter --noviewports. To do this, open the Windows command prompt and enter:
This will start OVITO without OpenGL graphics viewports. If you now see the program window showing up (unlike before), it would be a sign that the problem on your computer is related to the graphics driver. Please let me know what the outcome is on your computers.
In @nitin_luhadiya’s case, it appears to be a system with NVIDIA graphics. If possible, try running OVITO with the integrated Intel graphics chip that your computer may have. This can typically be changed in the Windows settings under “System > Display > Graphics > Custom options for apps”.
One significant difference between OVITO 3.10.x and 3.11.x is that we are now using a newer version of the Qt GUI framework. This can potentially be responsible for problems or have side effects (although it is difficult for us as application developers to do anything about it directly).
