Reducing interaction strength based upon number of neighbors

Dear All,

I have a problem where I want to look at the disassembly of a preformed polymer bundle (formed under interaction strength E1). I want to reduce the interaction strength such that the polymer chains at the periphery see much weaker interaction strength (per interaction) as opposed to the ones in the bulk of the bundle. By doing so, I want to simulate solvent effects where the buried residues are exposed to the solvent and see the weakening of interaction earlier than the ones buried in the aggregate.

Any suggestions on how to do this using LAMMPS would be greatly appreciated.
